Be wary of software that says it will automatically format your dissertation in accordance with APA or another style. This is a problem because almost all universities and/or departments have specific guidelines for dissertations that supersede APA, Chicago, or any other style. For instance, the APA Manual does not include specific formatting instructions for the preliminary pages of dissertations (e.g., the abstract, acknowledgments, list of figures); rather, the manual gives some general instructions and almost all universities create their own specific formatting guidelines. As another example, most schools have their own preferred format for the table of contents, some even requiring that all of the headings be made linkable throughout the document. Of course, there are a number of other issues like that. If you buy automatic formatting software, you'll most likely end up having to pay someone to do your formatting anyway, and then you'll be out more money, time, and hassle than if you had hired a formatter to start with.

So, take a deep breath, and find yourself a formatted. It's well worth the investment to finish off this final step in the process. You're formatting will be done hassle free, and you can finally get that darn thing in!
